Big Data Kenya-2021

Carringtone Kinyanjui and Bonface Osoro, former DARA Big Data and DARA Project students, conducted a 5-day workshop from 28-30 July 2021 in Nairobi to share their skills and encourage others in Kenya to develop similar expertise. Held at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) with academic support from Prof. Paul Baki, the gender-balanced event hosted 16 participants out of 400 applicants and featured two tutors. The workshop included presentations from industry experts, tutorials on data science, and a hackathon led by Dr. Nikhita Madhanpall, where participants analyzed Twitter data related to COVID-19 using sentiment analysis and NLP. The hack platform and associated support were provided by the Inter-University Institute for Data-Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) through ilifu, their cloud computing system. The event culminated in presentations judged by Dr. Sam Chege Maina, with Team Simba winning for their analysis of COVID-19’s impact on mental health. The workshop was praised for its enthusiasm and focus on using data science to address real-world problems. For more information, please visit the following page.
