DARA Big Data hosted its first event in Mozambique in March 2021, a 3-day hackathon at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Maputo. Led by Ramiro Saide and Dionisio Candido, with support from Dr. Nikhita Madhanpall and Dr. Claudio Paulo of UEM’s Department of Physics, the event had been postponed due to COVID-19 but resumed after a month. The hackathon featured presentations on data science from experts like Prof. Anna Scaife, Dr. Tawanda Chingozha, and Dr. Ricardo Ogando. The event saw 20 participants, some with limited Python experience, who analyzed Satellite Earth Observation (SEO) images of Mozambique post-Cyclone Idai to monitor flooding. The hack platform and associated support were provided by the Inter-University Institute for Data-Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) through ilifu, their cloud computing system. Teams presented their findings, and prizes were awarded for the most efficient team, best presenter, and team leader. For more information, please visit the following link.
